Santorini Volcano Kayak Expedition

Launching from the southern shore near Akrotiri, this sea-kayaking expedition traverses the inner caldera of Santorini and reaches the volcanic islets of Nea and Palea Kameni — the still-active remnants of the eruption that collapsed the original Minoan-era island around 1600 BC. The day begins with a one-hour paddling skills session in the sheltered bay below the Red Beach cliffs, where the rust-coloured volcanic rock above the waterline gives a vivid preview of the geology ahead. Paddlers then set out across the caldera, covering roughly eight kilometres to the eastern shore of Nea Kameni. The approach by kayak allows close inspection of the low lava coastline — jagged black basalt and sulphur-yellow mineral deposits that no larger vessel can get near — and landing directly on the volcanic shore to walk up to the main crater rim. On a clear day the crater emits visible steam, and the smell of sulphur is noticeable from the rim path. The return route skirts the base of the caldera cliffs, offering upward views of Fira, Imerovigli, and Oia perched on the cliff edges 300 metres above. Total paddling distance is approximately 16 kilometres; participants should be comfortable swimmers and have reasonable upper-body fitness. The season runs May through October; the window between 7 and 11 in the morning typically offers the calmest water before the afternoon caldera winds develop.
