Meteora Rock Climbing Experience
About This Tour
Meteora's sandstone pillars shoot up to 400 metres from the Thessaly plain in formations that look sculpted rather than eroded — a consequence of millions of years of river deposits compressing into conglomerate rock and then being slowly exposed by tectonic uplift. The climbing here is unlike anywhere else in Greece: routes ascend the same columns that Byzantine monks used as foundations for their cliff-top monasteries, and at the top of a pitch it is not unusual to glance across to a medieval bell tower at eye level. This one-day experience is designed for participants with basic climbing experience; absolute beginners can join with an extra morning skills session. The day starts in Kalambaka with a gear briefing and warm-up stretches, then moves to the approved climbing sectors at the base of the Great Meteoron rock group. Routes range from grade 4 to 7a (French system), with an instructor leading each pitch and a second guide managing the belay station below. After climbing, the group walks the footpath to the viewpoint above Rousanou Monastery for the panoramic late-afternoon light that photographers particularly seek out. The rock is best between March and June and again in September and October; summer heat makes afternoon climbing uncomfortable on south-facing faces. Bring a litre and a half of water, sunscreen, and close-toed shoes — climbing shoes are provided.
