Samaria Gorge Hiking Adventure
About This Tour
The Samaria Gorge in the White Mountains of western Crete is one of the longest walkable gorges in Europe, running 16 kilometres from the mountain village of Xyloskalo down to the Libyan Sea at the coastal settlement of Agia Roumeli. The descent loses roughly 1,250 metres in elevation, moving through a national park established in 1962 that protects the habitat of the Cretan wild goat, the kri-kri, as well as endemic plant species found nowhere else in the world. The hike begins with a steep descent on a wide zigzagging path through pine and cypress forest, gradually steepening as the canyon walls close in. By mid-gorge the trail passes through the narrows known as the Sideroportes — Iron Gates — where the vertical walls are only three to four metres apart and rise nearly 300 metres overhead, and a small stream runs across the path. The abandoned village of Samaria, halfway through, has a small church and rest area beneath enormous plane trees. The final stretch opens into a broader valley before reaching Agia Roumeli, where the only exit is by boat — a ferry runs along the coast to Hora Sfakion, from which the transfer back to Chania departs. The total walking time is six to eight hours depending on pace. Trekking poles ease the steep initial descent; the path is predominantly rocky throughout. The gorge is open to hikers from approximately May 1st to October 31st; early morning departure from Chania avoids the midday heat in the lower canyon.
