Rhodes Lindos Beach & Acropolis Tour

Lindos sits on the east coast of Rhodes about 50 kilometres south of the capital, and the approach by road reveals the setting in stages: first the whitewashed houses of the village climbing the hillside, then the medieval walls of the Knights of St John fortification, and above them the ancient acropolis rising to 116 metres above sea level with a sheer drop to the sea on three sides. This day tour from Rhodes Town combines the archaeological and medieval heritage of the acropolis with time on Lindos beach, one of the most sheltered and swimmable on the island. The morning is devoted to the acropolis, reached on foot up the stepped lane through the village — the narrow streets are too tight for vehicles — or by donkey for those who prefer. At the top, the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, dating from the fourth century BC, occupies the highest point, with views extending on a clear day to the Turkish coast 18 kilometres away. The medieval Governors Palace and the Crusader Church of St John occupy the lower terrace. The afternoon is spent on the double bay below the village: the main Lindos beach faces northeast and is sheltered, with calm water and a long sandy bottom suitable for swimming and snorkelling. A second smaller beach on the south side of the headland, accessed through the village, tends to be quieter. The bus back to Rhodes Town departs in late afternoon.
