Crete Olive Oil & Raki Experience

Crete produces roughly a third of all Greek olive oil, and the island's food culture — one of the most studied in the world for its health characteristics — is inseparable from the olive grove, the press, and the kitchen table. This day experience departs Heraklion for the agricultural belt south of the city, visiting a working multi-generational olive farm near the village of Houdetsi. The morning begins with a walk through the groves, where some trees are several hundred years old, and a practical explanation of the different harvest techniques and their effect on oil quality. At the estate's stone-built press room, a miller demonstrates the cold-press extraction process, and guests taste oils pressed from three different olive varieties — Koroneiki, Manaki, and Tsounati — at varying stages of ripeness, developing an understanding of how harvest timing determines flavour. The afternoon moves to a traditional Cretan home kitchen in a nearby village, where a local family leads a hands-on cooking session preparing dakos (barley rusk with tomato and feta), stuffed courgette flowers, and slow-braised lamb with artichokes. The meal concludes with a tasting of tsikoudia, the Cretan grape pomace spirit also known as raki, produced in the family's own copper still. Guests leave with a small bottle of cold-pressed oil and the session's recipes. The experience runs year-round; the olive harvest season, typically October through January, adds a working press and freshly milled oil to the visit.
