Zakynthos Blue Caves & Navagio Bay Cruise
About This Tour
The Blue Caves of Zakynthos are a series of sea caverns carved into the white limestone cliffs of Cape Skinari on the island's northern tip, named for the extraordinary refraction of light through the shallow turquoise water that fills their lower sections — the effect turns the cave interiors an intense electric blue that photographs and in-person experience render equally vivid. This full-day boat cruise from Zakynthos Town heads north along the island's western coastline before rounding the cape to access the caves, which are only reachable by small motorised rowboat from the main excursion vessel. Rowers take groups of four to five inside each cave, where the ceiling drops low and the water glows from below, the sandy bottom visible through three to five metres of clear water. After the caves, the main vessel continues south to Navagio Bay — also known as Shipwreck Beach — one of the most reproduced coastal images in Greece: a white sand cove completely enclosed by vertical chalk cliffs, accessible only by sea, with the rusting hull of the MV Panagiotis freighter (stranded in 1980) lying at the water's edge. Navagio is the highlight for most participants, and the boat anchors for a 90-minute swim stop. The return journey along the western coast includes a third anchorage at a sea cave near Porto Vromi for snorkelling. Bring a mask and snorkel, a waterproof camera if possible, and a light towel; the boat provides shade but no changing facilities. The cruise operates May through October.
