Vikos Gorge Trek Zagori Greece

The Vikos Gorge in the Zagori region of Epirus holds the distinction, in the Guinness records, of being the world's deepest gorge relative to its width — the walls drop up to 900 metres from the rim while the gorge floor is in places only a few hundred metres across. This two-day trek traverses the full length of the gorge from Monodendri to Papingo, covering roughly 14 kilometres of riverside path with an overnight stay in one of the stone-built guesthouses of Megalo Papingo. Day one begins in Ioannina with a transfer to Monodendri, a village that functions as the main southern entry point. The descent into the gorge follows a kalderimi — a traditional cobbled mule path — that drops steeply to the Voidomatis River, one of the clearest rivers in Europe, fed entirely by springs and snowmelt. The canyon floor walk passes overhanging cliffs of grey Jurassic limestone, stretches of plane and maple forest, and seasonal waterfalls. The Papingo rock pools, where the river broadens into natural swimming holes, are a standard lunch stop. Overnight at Papingo allows an evening walk to the Astraka plateau above the village, where views extend across to the Gamila massif. Day two crosses the lower gorge and loops back via the Beloi viewpoint, which offers the classic top-down photograph of the gorge's full depth. The trek is manageable for fit walkers; trekking poles are strongly recommended for the steep descents. Spring snowmelt (April–May) fills the river and makes the path particularly photogenic.
