Blue Eye Spring & Butrint Albania

About This Tour

Two of southern Albania's most distinctive sites lie within an hour of Saranda, and this day tour combines them into a single itinerary that moves from natural geology in the morning to layered archaeology in the afternoon. The first stop is the Blue Eye, a karst spring near Muzina where groundwater rises through a vertical cave to form a deep circular pool of extraordinary clarity. The cold water — emerging at around 13 degrees Celsius year-round — fades from clear at the rim to an intense indigo blue at the centre, with the cave entrance more than 50 metres deep and not yet fully measured. A short forest path leads to a small viewing platform; swimming directly above the spring is no longer permitted but the surrounding stream pools are open. From the Blue Eye the route continues south to Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological park that contains layered ruins from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman periods on a single peninsula above Lake Butrint. The guided walk covers the Greek theatre, the Roman forum, the early Christian baptistery with its ornate floor mosaic, and the Venetian-era triangular castle that crowns the highest point. Time at the small archaeological museum at the summit gives further context to the finds. Bring closed-toe shoes for uneven stone paths, sunscreen, and a swimsuit if you want to dip in the colder pools downstream of the Blue Eye.
