Albanian Alps Theth to Valbona Trek

About This Tour

The Albanian Alps — known locally as the Bjeshkët e Nemuna, the Accursed Mountains — rise sharply along the country's northern border, cutting deep glacial valleys whose villages remained essentially closed to outsiders until the early 2000s. This three-day trek crosses the iconic Theth-to-Valbona pass, one of the most spectacular and accessible alpine routes in the Balkans. Day one starts in Shkodër with a transfer over the rough mountain road to Theth, a stone-house village set in a bowl beneath limestone peaks. Walkers spend the afternoon at the Grunas waterfall and the locked-in tower house known as the Kulla e Ngujimit, a structure used historically to shelter men involved in blood feuds under the Kanun customary law. Day two crosses the Valbona pass at 1,795 metres, an eight-hour walk on a well-marked trail through beech forest, scree, and high-pasture meadows where shepherds still summer with their flocks. The descent into the Valbona valley brings an overnight at a family-run guesthouse where dinner is whatever the household cooked that evening: cornbread, fresh trout, white cheese, and homemade rakia. Day three follows the Valbona river downstream to the road head, where the transfer back to Shkodër runs along the dramatic Lake Komani ferry route — a three-hour boat journey through a flooded river canyon. The trek is moderate to strenuous; bring trail shoes with ankle support, layered clothing, and a small daypack only — luggage is transferred separately.
