Berat UNESCO City Tour Albania

Berat is known in Albania as the City of a Thousand Windows — a phrase that becomes literal when you stand beneath the Mangalem quarter at dusk and watch the rows of identical Ottoman-era windows light up against the white-plastered hillside. This day tour from Tirana covers the UNESCO-inscribed historic core, the medieval citadel, and the working town that surrounds them. The drive south takes about two hours through the Myzeqe plain. The morning starts at the foot of the Mangalem quarter, walking the steep cobbled lanes among houses whose construction follows a remarkable thirteenth-century pattern: a narrow stone ground floor for storage and a larger upper storey of timber framing and white plaster, generously windowed to catch the southern sun. The route crosses the Osum river to the Gorica quarter on the opposite bank, where a more vernacular form of the same architecture continues, and then climbs to the Berat Castle — a still-inhabited medieval fortress whose narrow streets contain the Onufri Iconographic Museum, dedicated to the sixteenth-century post-Byzantine icon painter who worked in this region. The fortress walls give wide views over the Osum valley and the Tomorr massif. Lunch is at a family konak inside the citadel walls — typical Berat dishes include slow-braised lamb with yoghurt, stuffed peppers, and the local sweet pumpkin tart. Wear comfortable walking shoes for cobbles and 200 metres of vertical climb to the citadel; a hat is advisable in summer.
