Rila Seven Lakes Trek Bulgaria
About This Tour
The Seven Rila Lakes lie at altitudes between 2,100 and 2,500 metres in Bulgaria's Rila mountains, formed during the last ice age and named for the shapes their basins suggest from above: the Tear, the Eye, the Kidney, the Twin, the Trefoil, the Fish Lake, and the Lower Lake. This day trip from Sofia covers the standard circuit of all seven, using the Pionerska chairlift to gain initial elevation and a panoramic ridge route that connects the lakes in sequence. The drive south from Sofia takes about two hours, ending at the lift station near the Rila Monastery massif. From the upper lift terminus a marked trail climbs gradually through subalpine meadows full of wildflowers in early summer, reaching the first viewpoint above the Lower Lake within forty minutes. The route then traverses the cirque, with the steepest section being the climb to Saliata pass — a 200-metre push that opens onto a panorama of all seven lakes laid out in tiered basins below. Total walking time is around five hours including stops; total elevation gain is roughly 600 metres. Mountain weather can change rapidly even in July and August; bring a waterproof shell, a fleece, and at least two litres of water. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential — the upper sections involve loose scree. The lift typically runs from June through October only.
