Plovdiv Old Town Heritage Walk

Plovdiv is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe — settled for at least eight thousand years on a cluster of seven hills above the Maritsa river — and it carries Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian National Revival layers within the small footprint of its old town. This walking tour starts at the Roman Theatre on Trimontium hill, a remarkably intact second-century amphitheatre still used for summer performances, where a guide outlines the city's evolution from Thracian settlement through Philip II of Macedon's renaming to Philippopolis. The route descends through the Old Town's narrow cobbled streets, where the nineteenth-century Bulgarian Revival mansions — symmetrical timber-framed houses painted in deep ochres and blues, with overhanging upper floors and rich interior plaster work — line the lanes. Stops include the Balabanov House, the Hindliyan House, and the Ethnographic Museum, each offering interior visits with original wall paintings and period furnishings. The walk continues past the small Roman Forum remnants and the Roman Stadium, where the curved seating tiers are now embedded under a modern pedestrian street with glass viewing panels. The afternoon ends in the Kapana arts quarter, a once-derelict commercial district now full of independent galleries, third-wave coffee, and craft beer; lunch at a local mezze restaurant is included. Bring comfortable walking shoes — Plovdiv's old town is mostly cobbled and uphill in places.
