Istanbul Grand Bazaar & Spice Market Walk

Istanbul's Grand Bazaar is not merely a market but a covered city within a city, with sixty-one streets, more than four thousand shops, and a continuous trading history stretching back to 1461 — and the Spice Bazaar a ten-minute walk away adds an entirely different register of colour and smell to the same morning. The tour begins at the Grand Bazaar's Nuruosmaniye Gate, where a guide orients the group to the bazaar's geography before leading it into the goldsmiths' corridor, the carpet halls, and the Sandal Bedesten, an inner vaulted chamber that once held the most valuable textiles arriving from the East. The guide explains the historic han structure of the bazaar and points out surviving Ottoman-era caravanserai architecture embedded within the market complex. After ninety minutes in the Grand Bazaar the group walks through Tahtakale to the Spice Bazaar beside the Golden Horn, where stalls sell dried fruits, spice blends, Turkish delight, and helva alongside medicinal herbs that have been traded here since the seventeenth century. Time is left for independent browsing and tea in one of the courtyard cafés. The tour operates daily; dress modestly as both bazaars are in a neighbourhood with active mosques, and keep a hand on bags in the more crowded aisles.
