Cinque Terre Coastal Trail Hike

The five villages of Cinque Terre sit like coloured building blocks stacked against vertical cliffs above the Ligurian Sea, and the coastal trail connecting them is one of the most visually varied walks in Italy. The tour begins with a short train ride from La Spezia to Riomaggiore, the southernmost village, where the guide introduces the geology of the coastline and the terraced vineyard system that earned the area UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997. The group then walks north through Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare, pausing at each village for a short exploration of the harbour, the medieval tower, or the local anchovies and lemon granita that define the food culture here. The trail itself alternates between well-paved sections and rougher stone paths cut into the cliff face, with total elevation gain of around 500 metres spread across the full route. At Vernazza the group stops for lunch overlooking the natural harbour, one of the most photographed spots along the entire Ligurian coast. The guide points out the dry-stone retaining walls — largely hand-built and maintained by local families — that prevent the terraces from slipping into the sea. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, bring at least one and a half litres of water per person, and pack a light rain layer for the exposed ridgeline sections. The tour runs year-round, with spring and autumn offering the most comfortable temperatures and the best light for photography.
