Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey

Topkapi Palace

Istanbul, Turkey · UNESCO World Heritage Site

Topkapi Palace was the primary residence of Ottoman sultans for 400 years (1465–1856) and is now a museum holding the Sacred Trust (Islamic relics including the Prophet Muhammad's cloak and the staff of Moses) and the Imperial Treasury (the Topkapi Dagger and the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond). The palace covers four courtyards and the Harem, the private quarters of the sultan's family. The Harem requires a separate ticket but is worth the upgrade for the tile work and the calligraphy. Plan a half-day; most travellers underestimate the scale.
